SmartPoint™ is an intelligent alarm processor built into every LEAKNET™ system. It is a versatile and powerful way of eliminating false alarms.

A SmartPoint™ is a collection of PPA points and MassPack accumulators configured by the user into a logical unit which alarms only when all specified conditions are met. You can build fast and fail-safe alarm schemes, or you can build conservative, false-alarm-free schemes – it's up to you. These are easy to change as your needs change.

SmartPoint™ is LEAKNET™ intelligent alarm processor and is LEAKNET™ most powerful way of eliminating false alarms.

Each SmartPoint™ operating within LEAKNET™ is created by defining a logical relationship among a collection of PPAand/or MassPack™ points.  Any SmartPoint™ can use any PPA point and any MassPack™ accumulator, and any other configured  SmartPoint™ to create this logical relationship.

Each SmartPoint™ monitors all of its component points to see if the alarm logic of the relationship is satisfied.  When it is, a fully qualified alarm is provided for the operator.

SmartPoint Features

PPA points,  MassPack™ accumulators and other SmartPoints™ may be used over and over to create as many SmartPoints™ as you need.

Configuration of SmartPoint™ arguments is done in a point and click editor window and takes only minutes to complete or edit.

Using SmartPoint

Suppose you want to monitor a simple pipeline running between a pair of pumps and several tanks 20 miles away.  There is one instrument, a pressure transmitter, near the pumps.  The line has two sources of nuisance alarms: pump changes and tank switches.  The following example shows how to use SmartPoint™ in two steps.

First, to eliminate nuisance alarms associated with pump changes.

  • Add a PPAflow point near the pump using an inexpensive clamp-on flow meter
  • Set this new PPApoint to alarm on an increase in flow.  (If the line develops a leak, flow suddenly increases as product begins to leave the line through the new opening.)
  • Configure a SmartPoint™ to alarm when the pressure point sees a decrease AND the flow point sees an increase.

Pump Operations NEVER create this combination of conditions, so the can NEVER cause a false alarm.

Second, to eliminate the tank false alarms,

  • Add a PPAflowpoint near the tank manifold using an inexpensive clamp-on flow meter
  • Set this new PPApoint to alarm on a decrease in flow.  ( Here if the line develops a leak, flow suddenly decreases as product begins to leave the line through the new opening.)
  • Add the new PPAflowpoint to the SmartPoint™.  Now an alarm occurs only when the pressure decreases and the pump flow increases and the tank flow decreases.

The logical argument defines the only condition associated with a leak on the line.
